What is omega-3?

Omega-3 is the most important substance for the health of the human body. It belongs to vital for humans polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs). They are not produced in the human body but enter it with food or supplements. PUFAs are the important building material for cells; they help treat and prevent a number of illnesses.

Sea fish is the main source of the most beneficial omega-3 PUFAs for the human body (DHA and EPA). However, just like humans, fish do not produce omega-3. It is accumulated in fat by eating molluscs, seaweeds, and small fish. Omega-3 can also be found in some plant-based products (linseeds, chia). Therefore, vegetable oils (sea buckthorn, linseed, mustard) can be its source. However, they are less efficient since they only contain alpha-linolenic acid (ALA).

Benefits of omega-3

Omega-3 is known for its beneficial properties. It is especially beneficial for the brain, which consists of 60% fats, one-third of which are fatty acids, and one fifth is DHA. High DHA concentration in neurons signals the importance of omega-3 for brain functioning.

Omega-3 contributes to:

  • improvement in perceiving and memorizing information;
  • growth of brain activity and its efficient functioning;
  • positive effect in preventing and treating Parkinson's and Alzheimer's diseases in their initial phases;
  • production of serotonin (the happy hormone).

Uses of omega-3

It is recommended to take omega-3 during meals to promote its better absorption. It is necessary to take 1–2 capsules per day to cover the daily needs.

Omega-3 side effects and overdose

Omega-3 might cause side effects: bloating, indigestion, fishн belching. However, these effects are short-term, painless, and insignificant, except for the cases of individual intolerance to its components or allergy to fish. In this case, you should stop taking omega-3 since it is made of fish fat. The cases of overdose have not been recorded.
