What is vitamin B?
The B vitamins are a nutritional base for brain cells. They belong to water-soluble vitamins. Any complex intended to improve brain functioning and memory must include the B vitamins. They help improve memory and increase concentration.
Benefits of vitamin B
Vitamin B is irreplaceable for the human body. All B vitamins have a positive effect on the brain:
- B1 – helps produce energy from glucose, has a positive effect on the nerve cell viability, promotes memorizing and processing of new information;
- B2 – is the main energy supplier, vital for people with significant mental workload;
- B3 (niacin, nicotinic acid) – participates in the production of energy and hormones, promotes the better transmission of impulses between brain cells, increasing their performance;
- B4 – stabilizes the functioning of the nervous system, restores its cells, improves blood circulation in the brain;
- B5 – activates long-term memory by participating in the impulse exchange between neurons, produces energy from carbohydrates and fats;
- B6 – helps produce serotonin (the happy hormone), maintains the balance of immune system and hormonal levels;
- B7 (biotin, vitamin H) – a coenzyme participating in the most important life-sustaining processes of the body;
- B9 (folic acid) – participates in the production of neurotransmitters and the process of cell division, improves the speed of thought and memory, the blood supply of the brain, indispensable for children, students, and people involved in active mental labour;
- B12 – beneficial for the brain, helps activate it after waking up and calm it down when falling asleep.
Uses of vitamin B
Vitamin B is indispensable for the normal functioning of the brain, heart, and transmission of nerve impulses. It improves the functioning of the nervous system. The B vitamins are essential for people with diseases of the cardiovascular system.
Generally, vitamin B is taken with food once a day. It is best to take vitamin B in the morning with breakfast. The form of release (syrup, capsules, tablets) does not matter.
When experiencing a vitamin B deficiency, it should be taken according to the dosage prescribed by the doctor.
Vitamin B side effects and overdose
Vitamin B does not cause side effects. However, uncontrolled use of some B vitamins in large doses might lead to unwanted results. The misuse during a long period might cause:
- Vitamin B6 – dysfunctions of the nervous system;
- Vitamin B3 (more than 2 g per day) – damage to the liver cells.
